Description Circular bundle of filaments from interior of bracken fern roots, peeled and dyed in water bath with acorns, walnuts, and rusted nails for 2 months; Wrapped in strip of loosely woven fabric; In opinion of 4 basket weavers, the white connecting tissue was not properly and completely removed from these filaments prior to the dyeing, resulting in poor color saturation.

Description Bundle of unprocessed deer grass stems, wrapped with length of white cotton twill tape; For use as a foundation in coiled baskets, each stem would be stripped of its leaves and seeds by holding the distal end in one’s fingers and then pulling the entire stem through a pair of roughened corncobs, or in modern times, using a scouring pad, working from top to bottom of the stem; For use, several stems would be gathered into a small bundle.
